Students' Rights and Responsibilities
(Dover Style)
It is one of my top priorities for you child to feel safe, important and valued while they spend time in my classroom and in school. In order to do that, ground rules and procedures have to be in place for everyone. This page is dedicated to laying that out in advance and providing parents with feedback on what's going on in our classroom.
Growing Young Responsible Adults....
Over the years I have learned how to make my classroom a more inviting and nurturing place. Students should feel safe and free to speak their minds, without judgement from the teacher or the students. I do have certain requirements that I push students to strive for, but that is because there are real life scenarios (such as public speaking and working with people we "do not like") that I want them to have some positive experiences with before reaching the end of their senior year. I set my expectations high because I know each and every student can reach those expectations if pushed in the right ways. On this page I have outlines my expectations, classroom rules, procedures, punishments, and a few other important things that take place regularly within my classroom. Please take a few minutes to look over the items below and contact me with any questions or concerns. Please note all students are held to the same standard, and I realize this may seem "unfair" but activities are differentiated within class to make it appropriate with higher and lower level students.
**Please keep in mind these memes (the pictures) below are meant to be humorous (we all need a laugh sometimes.) These are all things I have dealt with in my many years of teaching experience and I am sure if you ask your child they have heard someone in class ask OR, do this at least once (it may have even been them!)

Success and FailureThroughout the semester you will have many successes, but those will only come through trial and error, mistakes and ultimately failure. To fail, isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as you do not quit all together. You may not do well on an assignment, so you reflect on what happened (did not study, do not understand material, etc.), speak with teacher, try harder next time and move on. The absolute worst thing you can do it quit and give up all together, or freak out and start flipping desks like this guy in the photo. Failure is almost always over come through problem solving and that is an essential skill to becoming a self sufficient adult. So remember you HAVE TO KEEP TRYING... It's the only way you will be SUCCESSFUL!
Be in Class On TIme, Every DayIt is important students are in class everyday and on time for class. More than 15 absences will result in a failing grade in the class. If you are in danger of failing because of absences, please see me so we can work out a recovery plan. Passes will be required for students to enter the room. As a teacher, I can be held legally responsible for students whereabouts while not in class, whether I have admitted them or not. So as a result, I require a pass for students to enter my room.

Be PreparedComing to class or school with everything you need is imperative to having a successful day. I do not let students return to someone else's classroom and disrupt it to get something they forgot (for several reasons!) You must be organized, and ready to learn everyday with your tools in hand. Please have a writing utensil (pen or pencil), paper, small binder (for organization) and I recommend something to carry these items in, like a book bag. (Please see the syllabus for everything need to be successful in class.)

Homework & Class WorkHomework is given on a regular basis for a reason. Usually it is given when a more difficult topic needs practice OR we will be discussing the topic more in depth in the coming days and I want you to be an expert. COLLEGE courses usually require students to read the material ahead of time, then the professor will lecture on it for 50-75 minutes. HOMEWORK IS IMPORTANT!!!
Classwork is given daily. Be sure you are always [paying attention and understanding directions. Complete all work in a timely manner an getting it turned in for a grade. These grades are 30% of your final grade, which doesn't seem like much, but missing something can add up quickly!! |
Headphones, Cellphones, Etc.As you come into class daily it is important you put away you headphones, cellphones and any other distracting items and focus on the task at hand. My number one priority is to grow you as a person and prepare you for the REAL WORLD, or life in a career or college. A professor or employer will not tolerate headphones or you staring at a phone while they are trying to show you how to do your job or you teach you something for a final exam. Please be sure you are attentive in class and soaking in as much information as possible. I promise to be as exciting and engaging as possible, and make the class as interesting as possible, but I will need your help (see homework and attendance sections above!!) Asking questions I am currently covering will get you the same look as this young man here, so pay attention and try to avoid it!! :)

Passing Each and Every TestPassing tests is essential to passing any class. The final exam is a critical piece of the class and quite frankly failing it could result in failing the course. It is important that you are present for ALL TEST DAYS and you attempt to take all tests. Missing those days will dramatically lower your chances of even taking the test because you have to make arrangements with me to stay after to take the test. Second, you may not get the opportunity to re-take or complete test corrections depending on how long it takes you to schedule the original testing date with me. Lastly, but most important, you have 2 weeks from the original test date to take any missed test. Extenuating circumstances, such as long term suspension or sickness, can be discussed on a case by case basis.
*** LONG STORY SHORT - ALWAYS be present on TEST DAY!!! |
Make up WorkAccording to CMS policy, students are required to make contact with teachers to get make up work after an absence. Then the teacher and the student . I am flexible on time, because I understand many students will be making up work from several classes, as well as trying to keep up with life's other demands. However, I will not be able to accept a stack of make up work at the end of the quarter or semester. In order to prepare responsible young adults, it is imperative that students, first, approach the teacher and ask for work, and second, turn that work in, in a timely manner. Students can also email me directly for work if they know they will be absent for several days or visit the unit we are studying on this site. A lot of the info we are learning will be available here and I encourage students to use this site as an online study guide and make up file.
